Shooting at Ohio State vs Purdue

Brutus being nuts
10/23/10
I also wanted to post about my experience last Saturday.  I do some freelance work for a marketing company and last weekend, this freelancer was taken to the roof of St. John's Arena.  The unfortunate part was having to be there at 10am after going to sleep at 4am.  I needed to take photographs of the FanFest section where sponsors set up booths with games and giveaways, among other activities.  The scariest part was climbing up the rusty ladder with my camera bag on and I barely fit through the rusty hole.  Once up there, it wasn't so bad-although there's no railing and there were snipers watching for any malfeasance.  I got some decent pics, but the trees were covering most of it.  We went to a second, lower, roof about the height of the top of a semi from the ground and I was able to see so much more.  It was really a fun experience.  I then dashed to the stadium to take more pics and the weather was nice, which helped.  Brutus was in rare form, but enjoyable.  After the first half, the game got pretty dull and I left halfway through the fourth quarter.  Overall, a great day.

Meeting with Lauryn Byrdy

So, still trying to find my way and career path.  Lauryn Byrdy is a successful professional photographer who was kind enough to talk to me and let me pick her brain today.  She really helped me to really think about what I want to do.  I need to find some sort of focus and photography that I really enjoy.  I like to shoot too many different things which makes it difficult to narrow down a niche that suits me.  SO, now my next goal is to make some solid goals that I can stick to and to try to get some more work so I can eventually leave the bar (I work at a bar-i wasn't referring to being a booze hound!).  I took some fun pics of my friend's kids at the Circleville Pumpkin Festival and this was one of my faves-Austin licking his fingers after shoving popcorn into his mouth.

Been awhile....

I have now graduated from Columbus State with highest honors and am still struggling to find my place in the working world. I just visited my family in PA and hate having to tell them I am still not doing anything in my field other than some freelance work. I am trying to find ways into the Columbus fashion/magazine field. I need to find better ways to get the info on events sooner. I want to do more in my own community and Columbus is growing and becoming a better market for creatives every day. I just want to find my niche...

Trying to brand myself

I want to work on marketing myself.  I think it's hard to get that started, but once the ball is rolling, I hope things will start to happen.  I have decided to focus more on my strengths in an effort to be successful.  I do truly enjoy photography and I hope I can do something more artistic with it in the future.  I want to feel confident in what I am doing.  If anyone has any marketing ideas for the creative industry, do tell!!!!

Amy Parrish's Open House

So, I stopped by Amy's open house Saturday, February 28th and it was fantastic.  The studio was full of goodies and had beautiful images hung all over.  Amy was so sweet and there were children everywhere.  I assume some of them were clients, but everyone was having a good time.  I learned that she and I have somewhat similar situations in our academic careers and then discovering photography.  She is an inspiration to me and should be to photographers who aren't sure if they can do it.  It's a beautiful studio and I wish her all the best.

Finding jobs in Columbus, OH

I am a design/photography student in Columbus, Oh and I was recently laid off from my first design job.  Finding that kind of work in this town is tough enough as it is and now I have to search again.  I have been searching on Craigslist more often because when I previously searched on Monster and CareerBuilder, I got a TON of spam mail and lost faith in the system.  Now, I have been getting spam auto-replies from most of the Craigslist jobs I have applied for.  I do NOT appreciate being tricked into an ad website when I am trying to earn a living.  This is people's livelihood we are talking about!!!  I am already frustrated that I don't live in New York or Los Angeles where these jobs, while still difficult to obtain, are more abundant.  I love Columbus and the arts culture is constantly improving.  The Short North is a fantastic area for galleries and free expression.  I just wish I could optimistically look for work in this town.  I will just keep plugging away at school and TRY to hope for the best.
